The
plays
I
was asked to direct a play for the Summer Youth Theatre Program
in Northfield, MA by Stephen Hussey of Four Winds School. I was
excited by the opportunity having studied so much theatre in school
and performed in many plays. When I was searching for plays, I couldn’t
find anything that connected to today’s teenagers. So, I wrote
the following plays in hopes that I could connect with the teenagers
about current issues. I look back with fond memories of those summers
that I spent with the teenagers of the Pioneer Valley. I realize
that the kids taught me more than I could have ever taught them.
They helped me to see life with a broader perspective them. What
a wonderful gift.
All
of these plays were modified to have as many characters as possible
so we could involve as many teenagers as possible.

Who
Would You Be?
This
is a play in two acts with 18 characters. It is about issues that happen
when you place a bunch of insecure teenagers in a school. One of
the main character has and eating disorder and her friends are trying
to address the issue. Highschool is such an awkward time for so
many, it seems that most just try to survive it.
Tolerance
This play was directed by myself and my life long friend Gretchen
Licata.
This
is a two act play with a full set of monologues for 17 characters.
The setting is in the house of a single mother trying to raise three
children. The middle teenage daughter is going through a rebellious
phase where she is dying her hair and wearing dark clothing. The
Grandmother moves into the house as she has become elderly. The
friction between the judgmental older generation and the challenging
young daughter reveals a lot about the resistance to change.
Maggie’s
Place
This
play was written and directed by Gretchen Licata and Kerry Kazokas.
This
is a two act play with 19 characters. The focus of this play is
about a homeless woman named Maggie who hangs around on the park
bench in town. A group of teenagers become disgruntled and chase
her away after they weren’t allowed to skateboard in town
anymore. This play touches upon many different social issues that
exist in small towns USA. |
